Wood Burner

Wood Burner Fuel

There will be an initial supply for you in the basket. You can pick up dry, well seasoned wood from many of the garages or supermarkets should you want more.

If you choose to burn coal it must be smoke-less coal or Anthracite.

Cheap household coal, household rubbish, drift wood and building off cuts should not be used as their emissions will clog up the flue and result in an expensive repair!

The door handle (opening tool) is designed to come off so that it looks nice! To open the door, place the opening tool onto the turn point and turn it anti clockwise.

To increase air into the burner and therefore increase heat output/burn the fuel more quickly, pull out the air control knob in the centre of the burner, under the glass. To reduce the air flow (and so slow down the burning of the fuel) push it in.

The wood burner has a ‘multi grate function’ so that wood and coal can be burned, and so that the ash can be cleared easily. The grate lever is under the door opening tool. If you are burning coal you want the grate bars to be vertical with gaps in between allowing the primary combustion air to come up through the grate and through the fuel bed.

If you are burning wood you want the bars to be horizontal/flat, allowing the combustion air to come round the sides of the grate and over the top of it. When in this position, ash is able to build up on the grate – this is necessary for effective wood burning.

Movement of the grate from one position to the other is effected by using the door opening tool. The grate is put into the open position by moving the tool up until the handle is in the 1 o’clock position. The grate is put into the closed position by moving the tool down until the handle is in the 5 o’clock position. To riddle the appliance (clean out the ash), the tool should be moved between the 1 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions several times.

When burning wood, the ash should be allowed to build up. Riddling should only be carried out once or twice a week. When coal is burnt it should be riddled more often.

Ash can be collected and put in the composter behind the shed if it builds up too much.
